切笔如断金割玉
王羲之行书点画具有一种独一无二的凸出纸面的浮雕感,用笔如奏刀,似庖丁解牛般游刃高蹈,起笔转折处多施以硬直刚健的切笔,断金割玉,略无滞碍。

王书骨力雄强风貌最直观地显现于那些以笔锋方折切削为主导的字形当中。比较一下王羲之《奉橘帖》与王献之《廿九日帖》的两个“白” 字:

同用切法,大王的“落刃”之势形成一种“杀纸”的紧张感,左侧的短竖,笔锋直立深削,戛然顿止,折肩换锋陡峭,起落直截。而“小王”的切笔是以一种“轻拢慢捻”的柔和笔触与纸面亲密接触的,折肩的切换缓落稳推,前者的骨力与后者的媚趣形成了鲜明的对照。
再来看一下王羲之《丧乱帖》与王献之《廿九日帖》的两个“顿”字:

“大王”的左部短横与竖画起笔切入的截面铺毫方锐的效果惊心动魄,右部折肩动作幅度很小,稍稍蓄力后一拓直下,线型简洁之极。而“小王”的用笔则无论是切入还是切折,均不具备大王的巨大爆发力。
与《龙门二十品》切笔大刀阔斧的一味粗犷狠厉相比,王羲之运用切笔于峻拔表象下总有一种柔厚之气调和其间,方刚中寓圆融,方圆之间意味良多,刚健笃实的气象与悠游不迫的风致完美地汇合,《得示帖》的“明”字,《丧乱帖》中的字就是这样的范例。
唐人欧阳询行书学“大王”切笔最得法度,很精到地把握了直截简峻的行笔节奏,于骨力雄强方面也逊色无多。惜乎刚有余而柔不足,还是没有能力企及王书刚柔相 济、阴阳和合的审美极则,如《卜商帖》。
