The word \”福\” is a very auspicious character in Chinese folk. The original meaning of \”福\” is \”to pray to heaven.\” The word \”福\” in oracle bone inscriptions means \”holding wine in both hands and pouring it on the altar\”. Later, \”福\” specifically referred to the wine and meat used for sacrifices.

Later, with the emergence of small seal script, official script, cursive script, regular script and other fonts, the word \”福\” also changed more and more, becoming more and more artistic. In order to more fully reflect this yearning and wish, people simply paste the word \”福\” upside down to express \”happiness has arrived\” and \”blessing has arrived\”. So where did the custom of pasting the word \”福\” upside down come from?
One theory is that this custom is related to Queen Ma of the Ming Dynasty. One year, Ming Taizu Zhu Yuanzhang planned to kill people using the word \”福\” as a codeword. The kind-hearted Empress Ma decided to avoid the tragedy of killing, so she ordered everyone in the city to put a label with the character \”福\” on their doors before dawn. Naturally, no one dared to disobey Queen Ma\’s will, so every house had a sticker with the character \”福\” on the door. One family accidentally posted the word \”福\” upside down.
The next day, Zhu Yuanzhang sent people to go to the streets to check, and found that every house had pasted the word \”福\” on it, and one family had posted the word \”福\” on it. The word \”Fu\” is pasted upside down. Zhu Yuanzhang was furious and wanted to order the whole family to be executed. Fortunately, Empress Ma was smart. She hurriedly said to Zhu Yuanzhang: \”That family knew that the Holy Emperor was coming to visit today, so they deliberately pasted the label with the word \’福\’ upside down. Doesn\’t your coming here mean that blessing has arrived?\” After hearing this, Zhu Yuanzhang , feeling justified, ordered his release. In this way, a catastrophe was eliminated. From then on, people would stick the word \”福\” upside down when celebrating the Spring Festival, firstly to seek good luck, and secondly to commemorate Queen Ma.
Since then, pasting the word \”福\” upside down has been introduced into the homes of ordinary people. When people paste the word \”福\” upside down, they hope that passers-by or children will say a few words: \”Luck has come, blessing has come!\”
