The rotary engine was invented by Stephen Marius Balzer in the United States. Its main feature is that radially arranged cylinders rotate around a fixed crankshaft. The first rotary engine was born in 1894 and was used in automobiles.
The reason why it is weird is that it unconventionally fixes the main shaft while the cylinder rotates. Imagine, if the cylinder of a rotary engine is fixed and the crankshaft is allowed to rotate, wouldn\’t it be a radial engine?
The picture below is an animation of a rotating engine:
Look at the picture below which is the animation of the radial engine:
Are these two engines very similar??
Let’s take a look at the working principle of a rotary engine.
1. Suction: The piston moves from top dead center to bottom dead center through the rotation of the crank. The pressure in the cylinder drops, the cam pushes the intake valve, and the mixed air is sucked in from suction cylinder.
2. Compression:The cam closes the intake valve, the rotation of the crank moves the piston from bottom dead center to top dead center, compression mixture.
3. Work: The compressed air-fuel mixture is ignited by the spark plug and begins to burn, and the piston is pushed downward from top dead center to bottom stopping point.
4. Exhaust:The exhaust valve opens with the cam. Due to the rotation of the crank, the piston moves from bottom dead center to top dead center, and the combustion gas is discharged. The exhaust valve closes with the cam and the intake stroke begins again
This is a brief introduction to the rotary engine. What do you have to say about such a unique engine? Welcome to leave a message in the comment area!
